Colonial Cape Dutch Building Style

In the graceful curves of the Cape Dutch gable, or in the intricate patterns of a fanlight, or in the fanciful molding of a stucco swag or scroll, are evidence of the artistry and skills of craftsmen who left South Africa a legacy to be cherished. And in the stately proportions of the whitewashed buildings can be seen the vision of architects long gone. Yet, about a hundred years ago, Cape Dutch houses counted for so little that many were either altered beyond recognition or demolished altogether. Fortunately their value to the heritage of South Africa is now recognized, and a number have been — or are being — meticulously restored, the work based on careful research into the house’s history. [1]

The Eureka Farms house is based on the Morgenster house. Morgenster dates from 1786 and rich rococo curls grace the front gable of Morgenster, near Somerset West in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.  The Morgenster farm was created out of the division of Willem Adriaan van der Stel’s lands when he was sent back to Holland. The land was bought by Jacques Malan, the Huguenot founder of the large South African Malan clan; and it was his grandson Jacobus that built the house. [2]

Morgenster and Eureka Farms, side-by-side

A few modifications had to be made to comply with the United States and California building codes i.e. no grass thatched roof! The pillars in the front of Morgenster was moved to the back at Eureka Farms. The main reason was practical, the patio at the back leads out to the garden, spa, BBQ and entertainment area. Inside we have three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and great room. We designed (June) the house from the ground up. We visited a Groot Constantia replica in Napa Valley near San Francisco after reading about it in the Juluka newsletter and on a trip to South Africa we compiled a portfolio of Cape Dutch houses to aid the architect and the builder. The cottage-style interior compliments the Cape Dutch building style as well as our lifestyle.
